Planting Guide

High-quality potting mix is essential for all planters and should be specifically formulated for container gardening. Soil blends vary by plant type; for best results, consult a horticultural professional for plant-specific recommendations.

For outdoor planters, drainage holes are essential to prevent water retention and potential freeze damage in colder months. Our planters are designed with integrated feet to allow effective water runoff when used outdoors.

Indoor installations do not require drainage holes.

Best Practices

Direct Planting

  1. Line the base of the planter with landscape fabric.
    Add a layer of gravel.
  2. Best practice: rinse gravel thoroughly before installation to remove sediment.
  3. Add a second layer of landscape fabric.
  4. Optional: Build up the internal height of the planter using foam. For commercial installations, elevated sites, or rooftop gardens, consider using lightweight stone (such as lava rock) instead of foam to achieve the desired planting height.
  5. Once the desired height is reached, place a drop tray.
Best practice: a grow bag may be used in place of a nursery pot. Grow bags should match the litre size of the nursery pot to minimise air pockets, support healthy root development, and reduce soil runoff or staining.
  6. Stabilise the nursery pot or grow bag by adding filler around it.
Best practice: rubber mulch is recommended for stability and drainage.
  7. Optional: Finish with river stone, moss, or other decorative top dressing.

Inserting Pots

Select planters are available with internal shelves, designed for the easy placement and replacement of nursery and grow pots. Please contact Coastal Pots and Planters for compatibility and availability.

For a refined finish, add lightweight filler around the nursery pot on the shelf and complete with moss or pea gravel.

*Internal shelves are designed to support nursery pots only and are not intended for direct planting.
